106
McClave has been one of the top freshmen in the Shore this season and is a strong favorite here. #2 Knoeller got off to a slow start after sitting out the first few weeks of the season, but got on a great run to close the season once the rust was gone. Among his wins was a 5-2 decision over 3rd-seeded Orellana. Orellana earned the 3-seed on the strength of a pair of tight decisions over #4 DeLuise.
Prediction: 1. McClave (TRS) / 2. Knoeller (Southern) / 3. Orellana (TRN)
113
Corrigan is a 2-time champ and was a 5th-place finisher in Atlantic City a year ago. He is the clear favorite to win his 3rd title this weekend. There should be a good battle for the remaining two spots. #2 Mrozinski, the 3rd-place finisher in this weight last year, had a solid year for Lacey picking up 23 wins. #3 Crane has a 14-2 win over the 4th-seeded Curtis and a 7-3 win over his opening round opponent, Fichera.
Prediction: 1. Corrigan (TRS) / 2. Mrozinski (Lacey) / 3. Crane (Southern)
120
Another weight where the Indians will be strongly favored. Murray sometimes gets lost in the shuffle among the big names in South's lineup, but he has had a great year with several big wins. Among the big wins was his recent 7-1 decision over South Plainfield's Ray Jazikoff in the G3 Finals. #2 Garrity hung in there with Murray when the two met in a dual earlier, dropping a 4-2 decision. 3rd-seeded Mooney should benefit from Southern's tough schedule as I believe the seeds hold here.
Prediction: 1. Murray (TRS) / 2. Garrity (Lacey) / 3. Mooney (Southern)
126
#1 Tonneson and #2 Maikisch have been involved in big bouts all season long and I think that gives them a clear advantage in this field. The two met in the dual with Tonneson taking a 3-2 decision. Poklikuha does not get a lot of recognition, but has compiled 47 wins through his first two seasons at Pinelands. He's a legit sleeper to make a run here.
Prediction: 1. Tonneson (Southern) / 2. Maikisch (TRS) / 3. Poklikuha (Pinelands)
132
A Wilhelm/Theobold matchup would definitely be one of the high profile matchups of this tourney. Wilhelm won the 120-pound title last season, and was a state placer his freshman year. Theobold was the 126-pound champ last year, and has twice punched a ticket to Atlantic City. With those two expected to make it to the finals, the focus turns to the 3rd slot. #3 Davis has two close wins over #4 Mandara, a 3-1 decision and a 2-1 UTB decision. Mandara will have his hands full in his opening 4/5 bout as he faces Vecci in what will be a rematch from their previous meeting which was won 12-9 in sudden victory by Mandara.
Prediction: 1. Theobold (TRS) / 2. Wilhelm (Southern) / 3. Davis (TRN)
138
R Lewis, a 2-time state placer, 2-time Region champ, and 3-time District placer goes for District title #2 and is a heavy favorite to get it. The 2nd-seeded Campana won a District title in 2011, and was a 4th-place finisher in the Region last season. He should get through his half of the bracket to set up a meeting with Lewis. #3 Garrity and #4 K Lewis are the only other above .500 wrestlers here and should meet up in the 3rd-place bout barring any big upsets. In that matchup, I always like to lean towards the senior to get through.
Prediction: 1. R Lewis (TRE) / 2. Campana (Southern) / 3. K Lewis (TRN)
145
While they've had a bunch of 3-timers, TRS has never had a 4-time District champ. The Rider-bound Clagon will look to become the first in the program's long history to accomplish that feat on his way to try and successfully claim his 3rd Region title and his 2nd State title.
Prediction: 1. Clagon (TRS) / 2. Racanelli (Southern) / 3. Mattina (Pinelands)
152
One of the deeper weights in the District. Top-seeded Serpico is a 2-time placer and was a 4th-place finisher at Regions last year. He'll be looking for his first District championship. Also looking to close out his career with his first District title will be the 2nd-seeded Applegate who placed 3rd as a freshman and a junior.
Prediction: 1. Serpico (Southern) / 2. Applegate (TRS) / 3. DaSilva (TRN)
160
With Clagon, Jorge, and Rembach as the only entrants here above .500, and all having 20 or more wins, it is awfully tough to envision one of them not getting through.
Prediction: 1. Clagon (TRS) / 2. Jorge (Southern) / 3. Rembach (Manchester)
170
Pretty solid weight class here, but with the big season Fernandez has had for Lacey it would be pretty tough to pick against him making it through his half of the bracket. If the seeds hold in the bottom half of the bracket, it would set up a bout between #2 Kirk and #3 MacLaine. The two met back in mid-January with Kirk taking a 1-0 victory.
Prediction: 1. Fernandez (Lacey) / 2. Kirk (Barnegat) / 3. MacLaine (TRN)
182
Case was the runner-up at 170 last season and is a pretty good pick to make it to his 2nd consecutive final. The quarterfinal bout between Schmalz and Klebacher looks like it should be one of the better 4/5 matchups on the slate. The 2nd-seeded DeCarlo recorded a pin over #3 Lyons earlier in the year and is the pick to advance to the finals where he would try and avenge a 4-3 loss to Case from earlier in the season.
Prediction: 1. Case (Southern) / 2. DeCarlo (TRS) / 3. Lyons (Central)
195
Pretty wide open weight here. Mitchell gets the top seed on the strength of his 4-1 win over Leonor from back in early Janaury. Leonor, a 3rd-place finisher at 182 last season, has a 3-1 victory to his credit over the #3 seed Rutter.
Prediction: 1. Mitchell (TRN) / 2. Leonor (TRE) / 3. Rutter (TRS)
220
Bauta and Schinder have both spent time in the top spot of the Region Rankings at 220 this season. Bauta, a 3rd-place finisher last season, is the only wrestler from the Shore to defeat Schinder this season. Schinder, the champ at 195 last year, has some work to do before he can think rematch with Bauta as he has Paton, the runner-up at 220 a year ago, in his half of the bracket. With the past accomplishments of the top three seeds, and the seasons they had this year, it's tough to pick against this trio moving on to Regions, but there is a very game #4 seed in Frigon who will not make things easy.
Prediction: 1. Schinder (Lacey) / 2. Bauta (Southern) / 3. Paton (Central)
Hwt
With Hayden and Scherer both coming up from 220, it made a pretty strong field that much deeper. It will be awfully hard to pick against Hayden after the year he had at 220 for the Indians. Carrillo has had a big year for Central and holds a pair of pinfall victories over the 3rd-seeded Campano making him the favorite to advance through the bottom bracket.
Prediction: 1. Hayden (TRS) / 2. Carrillo (Central) / 3. Campano (Pinelands)
